I am Michael “Kayin” O’Reilly, the creator of the Indie freeware game, I Wanna Be the Guy, as well as I Wanna Be the Guy: Gaiden, though I’m working on a number of other titles! I am deeply invested in the ongoing conversations about games and game design and try and give my 2 cents whenever it feels appropriate and interesting.
My particular area of interests are pacing, difficulty, level design, world building and player psychology, though I do take some interest in competitive game systems and overall balance. My game design focus is mostly platformers, though I love to analyze other genres as well. My favorite classic games are probably Super Metroid, and Castlevania 3 and my favorite modern games are Dark and Demon’s Souls, Bayonetta, Super Meat Boy and Cave Story. I’m also an avid fighting game player having played in Guilty Gear and various Street Fighter tournaments.
Living in Long Island, New York, I try and make my living with games, though I occasionally do graphic design work and computer consulting to make ends meet. I’m also an amateur artist, though I’m not particularly good! I got my straight in game design in Middle School, playing with ZZT and eventually Megazeux, but did not make a serious attempt at making games until college. I enjoy conversations about game design, though also enjoy conversations on media and story telling in general. I am a huge fan of many parts of nerd culture and will usually be able to find something to talk about with anyone!
