Overview
Loni is the daughter of the Reichardt Grounds Keeper, whose mother died in childbirth. She was a childhood friend of the young and weird Sinlen, who mostly was stuck around the weird ghost house.
Loni was born male, under a different name. While having gender feelings at a young age, she didn't disclose them to anyone but Sinlen who would dress her up and call her by names Loni would pick. Loni was born with an unknown issue with her soul, which damaged the bond between it and her body. So upon hitting puberty, Loni began growing ill. Usually the soul-body link aids in lessing body dysphoria during times like this, but given Loni's condition, the rapidly changing rift between her body image and actual body ravaged her. She spent days bedridden, in an almost dreamlike state. The Reichardt family tried their best to help, but it took Sinlen to figure out the cause.
After a certain point, Loni's body couldn't be saved, so Adelbert Reichardt created a method for binding a willing soul to an animate object. They used a wooden doll, vaguely in the shape of younger Loni, put a wig on it and gave it a dress and tried the spell. It worked, and Loni regained consciousness in her new body.
- They tried to get her back in her body but it basically withered away before they could figure anything out.
- The first few months were brutal. While the doll body was 'female' it was very uncomfortable and crude.
- Loni probably could do barely more than look around and slightly nod her head for weeks as she learned to control it.
- It was probably a harrowing experience akin to someone recovering from full body paralysis.
- The next body was a massive improvement. While it was still mostly a wooden mannequin doll, they hired an artist to carve one to match better.
- Loni at this point realizes she can control multiple of these bodies at once. That being bonded ot a new one didn't break her connection to the old one.
- This was oddly comforting.
- Mostly because Loni had so much excess soul that was unbonded. Bonding to more bodies was better and made her feel more grounded in reality.
- A possessed body naturally seems more life like than the body does when inert. Even wooden Loni looked like a girl turned into a wooden doll rather than say, an animate wooden doll. There is an essential humanity that comes through and helps people subconsciously gloss over the imperfections.
As time goes on, Loni gets used to her body. Eventually, while she still has to hide her body under clothes, the faces get realistic enough that she can casually interact without people outside the house without them immediately realizing something is up. Her multiple bodies made her ideal for handing the massive Reichardt complex. What more, Loni's bodies seemed capable of acting semi-autonomously for mundane tasks. A body doing the dishes would continue doing them while her focus was elsewhere. Eventually, she became the only Reichardt maid (especially since the turnover rate in that crazy ghost house is wild.)
As she gets older and needs more and more mature bodies, she gets more and more involved in their construction. She reads and researches in her spare time and gets some assistance from Sinlen. As Loni gets older, her bodies get better.
- Upgrading the head was the biggest thing that made Loni feel comfortable. She could cover the rest of her body, but as long as she could look in the mirror and see herself as a person, she didn't strong dysphoria.
- Her bodies went through many material and construction eras. Wood, rubber, silicone, mixed materials. Stringed doll bodies to metal armatures to eventually simulated bone.
- The more realistic a body the better Loni's soul could puppet. When she added artificial lungs, she started to naturally breath again (and even panic when she couldn't). Her face could articulate "muscles" that didn't quite exist in the materials. Much later it even went as far as pumping fluid through her body to salivate and even cry.
- The more realistic her bodies get, the more of her soul it takes ot control them. Ultimately, it'll be easiest for Loni to focus all her attention on one body, but habit keeps her from realizing this right away
- Loni keeps bodies from different eras. Wooden bodies are great for manual labor while more delicate bodies are for socialization.
- Realizing her most realistic bodies start to heal on their own is a big game changer, as maintenance would be a huge issue earlier on.
Arc, Character Progression, and Relationships
Loni's story is a trans metaphor AND a trans story at the same time. Her experiences are abstracted, and have their own unique considerations, but the struggle to build a "you" that you can look at and see yourself in real. A lot of it is also her realizing that people can like and even love her romantically, not even despite her condition, but appreciating it as a part of her.
Another bit is her slowly realizing she can't distract herself forever. Focusing on work is comfortingly distracting, but ultimately, she has to focus on herself.
Relationships
Sinlen
Sinlen is who Loni is most loyal to. When Sinlen moves, Loni follows. When having to choose between working at the Reichardt house or working in Steeton with Sinlen, she chooses Sinlen. While Loni adores Sinlen and appreciates her support, she is also dependant on the Reichardts for her survival, as only they can bind her to new bodies. While in RP this is mostly treated as an unfortunate reality, in future BE games it may be implied that the two are working to teach Loni how to do things herself.
Sinlen for her part, is very protective of Loni. While both enjoy the power exchange in their relationship, it does complicate them also having a long term friendship.
Vayn (and her Crew)
Befriending Vayn and helping do cleaning and sewing at her porn studio gives Loni access to many open minded people from various walks of life and where she can comfortably figure out a lot of things about herself and have reasonable relationships with people. Beth is probably one of the first people to find Loni's doll body beautiful in it's own way, which helped give Loni confidence.
Loni also picks up skateboarding (because of course lol) from Beth's AV Team, a group of punk girls who used Beth as a way to get out of performing, but ended up getting involved in the back end of things. Loni gets comfortable to the point where she will skate in a tank top in one of her wooden ball joint bodies, completely okay with the fact that people are seeing her for what she is.
Personality
Loni is quiet and comes off as meek, though she can be very firm when pushed. She enjoys her job, and the fact her condition gives her a lot of secret free time. Despite enjoying some of the advantages of her condition, for a long time she is understandably shy about it. Loni is very supernaturally attuned, being stuck in liminal space, much like Beth. While she can't phase, she does have an easier time navigating magic environments. This allows her to navigate the many dangers and supernatural hazards of the Reichardt estate with little effort.
Loni is stubborn and dutiful. Even when she picks up a hobby like skateboarding, she becomes an obsessive practicer. Among Loni's friends later in life, she remains quiet but becomes a lot more humorous and jokey.
Appearance
Loni is leonese, having blonde hair, blue eyes, and dark skin. Her bodies for most of her life are pretty petite and short. While she could change this, for most of her life she felt uncomfortable going too extreme with her body. She had to keep continuity to feel like her. When her bodies get more realistic, she starts feeling more confidence to give herself more shape, though she remains on the small side. Her hair usually is neatly cut and put up in a clip or in a bun.
Loni likes dressing up. While her usual maid dress is pretty plain, around Sinlen (who both tolerates and... well, enjoys it), she likes wearing cuter maid outfits. Casually, once outside Aistoria, Loni starts just... dressing like a normal woman from the area.
Bodies
Loni's first bodies were quite crude and roughly modified to look more feminine to help Loni bond better. They were awkward and clumsy and often distressing for Loni, especially the marionette style head. Bodies of this generation no longer exist and were a stop-gap measure at best.
Much more refined wooden bodies. Much more nimble and easier to bond with, but the faces were still quite crude. Some of these are still in use, though the heads of this generation are not. Ideal for tasks that cause more abuse than normal, often cleaning and yard work.
When Loni got older she started taking the initiative when it came to building her own bodies and heads. While crude frames covered in foam and flesh colored rubber wasn't sophisticated, it was a huge improvement. Basic artificial organs like lungs allows and a tongue allow her to speak without using a strange magical voice.
Massive improvement when Loni switches to a silicone process. Early silicone bodies still had strong seams as the parts had to be created separately for maintenance and repair purposes. Basic painting and makeup work to give the rough appearance of skin. Heads were still detachable so most heads come from this generation (though most have been refurbished and painted better).
Modern body. Human-ish skeleton instead of armature. Multiple layers of different cast materials to give her body an extremely realistic touch. Fake pores and veins painted into the skin. Artificial heart magically pumps fluids through her body. Body is realistic enough that her soul is starting to aid it in healing and repair, though Loni still does not realize what's going on.
