Flags of Aistoria

Just went through Aistoria to work out all the regional maps. There are 7 kingdoms in Aistoria, plus the (frankly quite big) Papal State and I figured it'd be fun to go through them and talk about my thought process with the designs, which I will go over in quasi arbitrary order.

Golgia

Start off with the least developed, least important nation in Aistoria, which has a very handsome flag. Golgia sits between Bherigan, the mountains and the huge lakes of the Valis and Lake Ortega so it's not ISOLATED but as a place with clear borders I feel like it grew to its natural size and just hung out there.

Since there isn't a ton of Golgia lore (vaguely austro-hungrian with some slavs and Americans who I think became rich and fancy) I just tried to make a handsome, simple flag. Cause we need some. Honestly, looking at the spread of maps, it's role as a simple flag is really important!

Bherigan

Bherigan is a conglomeration of a ton of small kingdoms that came together to pretend themselves from getting eaten from the outside. Bherigan is very loose as a kingdom, regions acting almost like their own little countries within it, even occasionally still squabbling and even occasionally skirmishing with each other in the past.

As such a rampant chimera felt right. This fused body of disparate parts, lumbering together as one. The ls to have a region for each of the parts of the Chimera (There are more than 3 areas in Bherigan, but those would be the main three). Right now the only region covered by this is Steier, the land east of Esperada, whose heraldry has a western facing lion to contrast Leone (the region of Esperada directly connected to Steier). We'll get into Heraldry in some other post though.

Esperada

Esperada and Connatia (coming next) both have the Spanish Peninsula trait of putting a coat of arms on the flag. The heraldry on the map is of House Belarose. The blazon for it, as written by Karami, is...

Per saltire Gules and Pean, on a saltire nowy or a rose of the first

Also the flag needed blue in it for some reason...

Connatia

Almost intentionally obnoxious and ugly. Big messy coat of arms from a lot of political marriages to gain territory. Honestly I just randomly generated the flag layout and was like "Wow this sucks" before randomly growing on me. Someone has to have the dumb messy flag. And here, the blazon for the coat of arms on it.

quarterly, first gules, a wheel or, second argent, an imperial crown azure gilded or pearled argent, third paly bendy argent and sable, fourth per fess wavy vert and azure, a dolphin contourney or, overall an inescutcheon azure, a cross of four ermine spots argent within a bordure or

Vaniway

The last flag I did but I wanted something to stand out as different that didn't look like Europe2. Purple is not common at all on flags and appears in no field son any country flags. This is because of issues with dyes that clearly they don't have currently. The fields are divided by a bar, inspired by several country flags, but largely Kazakhstan, who basically just said "It's our aesthetic".

The endless not was an attempt to pull in some south asian imagery. While Esperada doesn't show as many obvious signs of it's Indian ancestry, Vaniway does. Purple is also great for one of the richest regions on Aistoria!

Birschmark

While a lot of the naming conventions remain from the remaining Scandinavians that where here when the world got rended, there is a large persian population around parts of Birschmark. Karami suggested I do middle eastern/islamic color scheme but with a non middle eastern flag lay out. We added the Zoroastrian fire temple symbol to hint at some complicated religious interactions in the region. The three stars are supposed to represent unity between different regions of Birschmark. Like Bherigan, Birschmark is a sorta loose conglomerate.

Danere

Danere is the more "separate" county in Aistoria, part of the Combine only through war and duress. That said, they're in the extreme polar north and kinda do their own thing. Their noble family, assigned to them by Aistoria, kinda just... chills at the border. Even they know they're symbolic. Danere can and does thrive without them, as some weird high magic collectivist snow commune.

Anyways Danere has a mostly Sub Saharan Africa populous so I tried to take color and design cues from there, making something symbolic. A field of green buried under snow and a boon in the black sky of a long polar winter.

Papal Territories.

This one is boring and straight forward since that is literally just the current papal insignia. Maybe at some point I'll fuck it up more. It's sitting on a swiss cross which is a play to the fact that the current vatican is kinda sorta where the swiss alp" would be. They have different names now and are unrecognizable (okay technically they're not the same mountains at all cause shit is fucked up but that's a whole tangent) but years and years after the rending people kinda get where used to be wear on the map and throw backs to the old world are a common way to try and imply age and legitimacy.

Anyways there are other national flags I have for places outside Aistoria and I got some more heraldry but I can post that later. I'm sure some of these will change in the future.
