Naomi's older brother, former heir to the Duchy of Leone. He is a major character during Brave Earth: Prologue and Tower in the Sky.

    A quick rundown:

    • Trevor is an extremely skilled Hunter. Why an important heir was allowed to do such dangerous work is another question
      • Part of this might be why Naomi was put with The Order of Saint Alistair. The Order mostly being used as a parade unit would mean she'd be relatively safe.
      • This of course does not work out.
    • Seemingly the perfect older brother. Trevor always seems cool and confident confident.
      • This is a bit a facade. Trevor is very good at compartmentalizing. Under his cool exterior, he is always stressed and nervous.
      • Trevor kinda sees Naomi as everything he pretends to be.
    • Trevor's faith is quite shaky. While he puts up appearances, he spends a lot of time questioning the existence of God.
      • The nature of the world implies there has to be some higher forces somewhere, but he has a hard time believing the exact teachings of the Church.
      • Trevor has confided this to Father Bhatti, the San Victoria Priest, who helps him with this through religious study. This is hinted at in Prologue.
      • Ultimately the social pressures around the church directly lead to the events of Tower in the Sky.
    • Trevor is gay. He is in a secret relationship with another Aistorian noble and mage, Count Bauer.
      • Bauer shares Trevor's shaky faith, but is a bit more willing to resort to extreme measures for answers.
      • Bauer pressures Trevor to let them use the Ritual Book from Prologue to attempt to summon god.

While the attempt eventually succeeds, Trevor is killed before it happens by Cassara in the middle of Tower in the Sky.

Thematically, Trevor is a character crushed by the expectations and social pressures placed on him. By trying to bear all the weight of his responsibilities without complaint, his life falls to pieces and he ruins his life in a a futile, desperate last grab for misguided hope.

Naomi, now inheriting all the same pressures put on Trevor, now needs to find a better way to navigate them.

    Verbanner

Hunters swords are usually already massive things. They are often oversized, unwieldy blades, meant for slaying giant monsters rather than people. Even among these weapons, Verbanner is among the largest.

Wanting to protect his son and heir, Verbanner was commissioned at great expensive by Duke Edwin vos Cruz. It was cold forged from a single, giant raw hunk of naturally magic iron. Such a large single piece is both rare and expensive, but gives the sword an intrinsic astral presence, making it both near indestructible, and able to banish astral entities.

    "Die Teufel glauben auch"
    "The Devils also believe"

The sword is engraved with German, written in Shavian script. The top line refers to the name of the sword, Verbanner, or Banisher, and the bottom line is a section from James 2:19, which reads:

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well. The devils also believe β€” and tremble

While meant in a way to imply the sword carries the power of God, a power that demons acknowledge and fear, it unintentionally mirrors the true strength of a magic weapon. By having a reputation for being a powerful demon slaying sword, that power becomes real. You know this sword is Verbanner... and so do the daemons.

... In an abstract way, at least, as the actual nature of daemons mean that most don't actually know anything.

    • While the sword is magic and has a bit of a reputation while Trevor used it, it took on more strength after his death.
      • The sword is more important to Naomi, who associates it with her brother, than it did to Trevor. Trevor liked the sword, but would not be torn up if he had to replace it.
      • Falling down an Astral Column probably did a lot to juice it up with magic too.
    • Trevor needs both hands to effectively wield Verbanner. While Naomi can't effectively wield it at all, by later points in her life she is able to use it one handed while also using her shield.
      • It never completely replaces Naomi's sword (The Sword of Brandt)
