Work in Progress Thread.
« on: January 09, 2011, 04:19:41 pm »

I've seen a few threads lately with games that either have just an idea/name , screenshot or a barely recognitionable demo. Well I'd like to remedy this with this thread.

Imagine you've worked really hard on your new room , slaved away on a new boss or created that much needed title screen and want some critique. But alas you have very little of your game done and don't want to make a pointless thread. Well heres your solution. Post anything WIP about your game here, to get critique without clogging up the forums. It could be a boss design, a new tileset or even a short video , godforbid it could be anything.

EDIT: Don't post here if you don't want criticsm, this thread is for constructive criticsm. Your allowed to disagree with criticsm but do not resort to bad language if someone does not like your game.

Don't bring up unrelated matters here , this thread is for criticsm and criticsm only.

If someone does not like your fangame and says why do not swear at them and do not get angry with them. Respect other opinions and yours will too be respected.

Just to get this clear, you are allowed to post about any game your are currently making; Fangame or not.

@zeapawak

Your bosses look really small, I'm going to asume your making a fangame, so I suggest you make your bosses bigger and threatening.

If your not making a fangame what kind of game are you making because you were a little vague.

I'm gonna enlarge those boss (I said they were only sprite sheet right?)

for example the first boss on the list will be about that size

There is an area in my fangame which looks like this:

My question: Is the purple tileset good looking with the yellow and red background or does it hurt the eyes (and I should change it)?

^^^ Some of my bosses are very small. What is the problem?

^ The purple and orange background looks fine to me. However, it's weird because the building in the middle appears to be just floating.

@zeapawak This is more for work you've done yourself not really just going on spriters resource and getting loads of sheets.

Looks fine to me. The level design isn't amazing but it looks okay.

It was to show some of my idea and know if they were good enough

If you didn't know I'm working on retro now , but most of what we reveal before alpha's is up to Miracle.

Since this I though making my own IWBTG game would be pointless. However this lef tme with a lot of code and idea's I'd already finished and decided it would be a waste to get rid of it all. So I decided to make my own original game, with throw backs to IWBTG and other games I like. I don't have anything to show off yet but I can tell you the gist of it. I'd like some opinion.

It will be a very free game. In that there will not be 6 or however many paths to travel on you will be bale to traverse the whole map as you like. Here's the twist, in the game you will find things that are impossible to get past. This is because you don't have the ability to get there yet. You start off being only able to walk left and right and jump once. With each ability point (so far shown as a white orb) you find you get to choose one ability to upgrade. At the start you probably want to choose the save ability. Or else when you die you'll loose all your progress (Yes you have to earn the ability to save. Im a bitch like that).

You will be able to view the map at any time but only the rooms you've discovered. Each ability will cost one point but for some you will have needed to buy at least ten abilities before getting it. This way you can't over power yourself straight away with abilities like "Bullet Hell" , "Trigger FInger" or "Time Travel".

The game will be called "Bliss". When I finish my first couple test rooms , 'll throw out a beta..

Let me know what you think guys ^^

I'm currently working on a game much like that except you don't choose your ability you have to find it although I really like your idea of choosing you ability to set your own path.

My game is about some alien dude that crashes onto a planet and has to repair his ship to get back home. This game is going to be an action puzzle platformer and has absolutly no text in it besides for the title and the credits. You will also never lose control of your character in the game not sure if anyone actually cares but I feel this is kinda important.

also yes I am as mean as DERF, You do have to repair the save feature on your ship to save. When you start the game you have absolutly nothing but your head hands and feet and the destroyed remains of your ship. This game is going to be very non linear so you can collect items and abilities in almost any order you want to a degree. You can also find materials and build vehicals to further increase your range of travel.

This game is heavily inspired by La Mulana and Super Metroid and partially Within a Deep Forest. So if you played any of those games you might have a general idea of how the game might look. Not sure what else to say, i have no idea what im going to call the game at this point but thats usually the last thing I think of when making games. So what do you think, I don't really have anything to show right now because I'm still in the planning phase.

If you've ever played fallout , thats how my ability (perks in fallout) work.

Sounds very interesting actually Anon. It could work very well , I'm interested to see some progress :L

I have a question: What do you think? Should bosses vanish if you've defeated them and never come back or should you have the chance to defeat them again and again?

Well this is how I like games. If you have to go through their room again then they won't be there , but make a special room called "Arena" or something where you can choose to fight the bosses you have defeated again.
