The problem is you can't cancel a variable very easily. Cancelling y leads to a dead end, rearranging so you cancel x leads to the exact same dead end, rearranging so you can cancel a ends up giving you logxy = logyx which is pretty useless, since it's obvious they're going to meet at y=x anyway.

I've got a solution now cause I cheated and looked it up :(

No, you're wrong. If something costs $1 more than half of its original price, then that means $1 must be half its original price.
But there's no original price. Just "the price".

1 + 0.5*(1+ 0.5*(1+ 0.5*(1+ 0.5*(... etc.

half "it's price"

If it costs 1 dollar more than half "it's price", then that means 1 dollar must be the other half. Therefore the price is $2.

Plus, here's the great thing: That series converges to 2. Take a look.

I'm a maths wizard... :)

√x = 1 / (1 - i)

Solve for x.

You know, I'd never considered simplifying -1/2i to i/2. Now I feel stupid.

I'm a maths wizard... :)

√x = 1 / (1 - i)

Solve for x.

1/2

x=(1/(1-i))^2
(1-i)^2=1+(i^2)-2i=1-1-2i=-2i-->x=1/(-2i)=-1(i^-1)/2=i/2

Where did you get 1/2 from?
